Negative Thought Patterns: 7 Common Forms

The content of negative thoughts changes, but the structure often repeats.

All-or-nothing thinking

Anything short of perfect becomes failure.

Catastrophizing

A difficult outcome is treated as inevitable and disastrous.

Mind-reading

You assume you know what another person thinks without enough evidence.

Fortune-telling

You predict the future as if the prediction were a fact.

Overgeneralizing

One event becomes a permanent rule: “This always happens.”

Discounting positives

Useful evidence that contradicts the negative story gets dismissed.

Labeling

A behavior or mistake becomes a fixed identity label.

What to do with the pattern

Naming the pattern creates distance. Then ask what a more specific, evidence-based interpretation would sound like.
