How to Reframe Negative Thoughts

A good reframe preserves reality. It removes exaggeration, not inconvenience.

Write the thought

Example: “I embarrassed myself and everyone will remember it.”

Identify the prediction

You are assuming both what everyone thought and how long they will remember it.

Check available evidence

What actually happened? Did anyone respond negatively? Are there other plausible interpretations?

Write a balanced alternative

“I felt awkward. Some people may have noticed, but I do not know what they thought, and this is unlikely to define how they see me.”

Choose an action

If there is a useful next step, take it. Reframing works best when it supports behavior rather than becoming endless mental debate.
