Affirmations vs. Thought Reframing
Affirmations choose a statement to repeat. Reframing starts with the thought you are actually having and examines it.
| Affirmations | Thought reframing | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | A chosen statement | An automatic thought |
| Main action | Repeat or rehearse | Question, evaluate, rewrite |
| Common problem | Can feel false if too extreme | Can become over-analysis if endlessly repeated |
| Best use | Simple cues and intentions | Specific distorted or harsh thoughts |
You can combine them
Use reframing to create a believable sentence, then repeat that sentence as a cue. This avoids forcing an affirmation that has no connection to your actual concern.
